Situated 7 kilometers from Sauternes on the banks of the Ciron river, Villandraut (population 1,000) was a stopover on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Founded in the early 13th century by André Lopez de Villandro, it was above all the birthplace of Bertrand de Got, who later became the first Pope of Avignon, under the name of Clément V. Between 1305 and 1312, he had the Château de Villandraut built as both a fortress and a palace. Despite the wide moat designed for its defense, the building was attacked by the French at the end of the Hundred Years' War, and later by Protestants, who laid siege to it.
