This is not just the name of the famous plateau, it is also the name of a village of less than 100 inhabitants, the highest town in the Limousin, perched between 890 and 920 m above sea level. The commune of Millevaches also stands out because it is situated on the watershed between the tributaries of the Loire and the Dordogne rivers. To the north, the Vienne river has its source about 4 km from the village, and to the south, the Vézère, Luzège and Triouzoune rivers, 3 to 5 km away. In 1048, the viscount of Aubusson ceded the place called Millevaches - Millevacas in Latin - to the abbey of Uzerche which gave its name to the plateau.
