This city of Celtic origin was the capital of the family of the Lords of Ventadour. From their sumptuous fortress, whose imposing remains stand a few kilometres away, they made the fortune of Egletons at the time of the fina amor, the poetry of the troubadours. Egletons has ramparts with five gates with the arms of Ventadour, the church of Saint-Antoine with modern stained glass windows, the 12th century machicolated bell tower and the former Penitents' Chapel which now houses exhibitions of paintings. The village is also known for its Salers, the gentian-based aperitif from the local distillery.
