All in red, Collonges-la-Rouge is unique. Built by monks in the 12th century, it was fortified (two of the four gates remain) and became a stopover on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. Its red sandstone walls, slate roofs and trellised vineyards bear witness to its winegrowing past, while its castles, noble mansions, 16th-century houses, manor houses and market hall have made it one of the most beautiful villages in France. It's well worth taking the time to stroll around the village, browse the little stores and enjoy the local gastronomy, why not visit the market?
