THE CISTERCIAN ABBEY OF AUBAZINE
Cistercian abbey founded by Saint Etienne d'Obazine, offering courses of two to three days, from April to September
This Cistercian abbey founded by Saint Etienne d'Obazine (at the beginning of the 12th century) had a great influence throughout Aquitaine. At its peak, it brought together more than 200 monks. During the French Revolution, the buildings became state property for 60 years and were then bought by a Corrèze family and given to the Congregation of the Sisters of the "Holy Heart of Mary". The attic of the abbey then housed an orphanage for girls until 1965. Nuns belonging to the Melkite Catholic Church resided there for 20 years after the closure of the orphanage; today they reside in a farmhouse 200 m from the abbey. Of the buildings built in the 12th century, the fountain-sink in the centre of the garden, the chapter house with its stone steps, the work room, the kitchen and the fishpond where the monks' canal flows into, remain. For lovers of calligraphy and illumination, the abbey offers two- to three-day courses (by reservation) from April to September.
