Probably founded in Gallo-Roman times, Allassac was ravaged by Pepin le Bref during his fight against the Duke of Aquitaine and suffered from the Hundred Years War but was never taken by the English. During the Wars of Religion, the future King Henri III stayed there in 1569. Because of its location, a veritable walk between the Bas Pays and the Limousin plateau, its vast territory in the heart of a rich agricultural country (cereals, fruit crops, livestock) Allassac has played a role in trade. The economic wealth of the country was based for a long time on the monoculture of vines from the 8th century until the destruction of the vineyard by phylloxera in the years 1875-1880. This vine culture, whose vestiges mark the landscape (vineyard huts, winegrowers' houses) has been experiencing a certain renaissance for several years with the replanting of vineyards on old plots and the creation of a sales outlet in the hamlet of La Jugie. Attested since the 16th century, the exploitation of slate was the flagship of the Allassac industry from 1850 to 1950. From wells and galleries, the soft schist was extracted and then cut into slate slabs for roofs or into building rubble. The products were exported throughout France and abroad because of their high quality. Despite this, the slate quarries closed in 1977. In 2006, Ardoisières Bugeat put the site back into operation. In the heart of the Pays d'Art et d'Histoire Vézère-Ardoise, Allassac, a small town with houses built in black schist and topped with slate, has a rich and diversified natural and architectural heritage, well developed : Saint-Jean-Baptiste fortified church, César tower, manor of the towers (late 18th century), 5 "annex" villages and their small chapel (La Chartroulle, les Trois villages, Brochat, la Chapelle, Saint-Laurent), bread ovens, fountains, wells, rockers, vine huts, gorges and waterfalls of the Clan, picturesque site of La Roche and its beautiful panorama over the gorges and the valley of the Vézère..
