Listed since 2008 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, 6 km west of Prades and 45 minutes from Perpignan, a superb medieval town is hidden behind centuries-old ramparts and is one of the most beautiful villages in France. At the crossroads of the Cady and the Têt rivers, Villefranche is a strategic lock which served for a long time as an outpost of the Kingdom of Aragon. In addition to the enclosure with its double covered covered walkway, one must see the superb Romanesque church of Saint-Jacques, built in the 12th century, and about twenty facades of private mansions. The pink marble of Villefranche, visible in the supporting wall of the towers of the town, has been used for centuries for all the churches and monasteries of the region. Fort Liberia, a magnificent example of military architecture, dominating the walled city, deserves a visit. Recognizing the strategic importance of the city, Vauban had the fort built, restored and moved the ramparts. Built of pink marble, the fort displays to visitors its soft brick walls (made to house cannonballs) and its interior corridors - thick walls from which the attackers were fired upon. With quality accommodation, equally honourable restaurants and an exceptional architectural heritage, the town is an almost obligatory stopover for anyone visiting the department. One enjoys strolling through the pedestrian streets where many craftsmen and shops selling local products have made their home.
