Petit Futé's opinion on L'ABBAYE SAINT-MARTIN DU CANIGOU

Plate millesim 2022

The abbey appears to the visitor like an eagle's nest on a rocky spur overlooking a ravine at the bottom of which the Cady roars. More than its sisters Saint Michael of Cuxa or the priory of Serrabone, Saint Martin fascinates as much by its architecture as by its grandiose and 'vertiginous' site. This Mecca of Romanesque art, especially of the first southern Romanesque art, was founded in the 11th century by Guifred II, Count of Cerdanya and Conflent and his brother Oliba, Bishop of Cuxa and Ripoll. It is 1098 metres above sea level and consists of two superimposed churches with a cloister next to each other. The abbey, today classified as a Historic Monument and "nugget" of the Grand Site de France Canigó Grand SIte, is occupied by the community of the Beatitudes. The site can be reached in less than 45 minutes on foot from Casteil by a beautiful path that climbs up to the sky. Visits are only guided (and so exciting!) and last about 1 hour. The website is rich in information to prepare your visit. For those in search of spirituality, a retreat of 2 to 6 days is possible. They will participate in the spiritual and fraternal life of the community, the rest of the day being devoted to meditation and silence. In addition to the architectural and religious aspect, a visit to the abbey is a pretext for a very beautiful walk in the undergrowth leading to the holy place. There are various loops that pass through the site and offer sumptuous views.
