At an altitude of 700 m, this small thermal and climatic resort has been known for centuries. Its natural hot springs, gushing directly from the bowels of the Canigó, are renowned for the treatment of rheumatic and respiratory ailments. They were exploited by the monks of the Saint-Martin-du-Canigou Abbey until the French Revolution, then the Count of Burnay - a wealthy Portuguese banker - built an elegant spa complex. At the beginning of the 20th century, the city rose to the rank of one of the most beautiful French thermal resorts. Many foreign personalities and aristocrats came to stay there, including the Englishman Rudyard Kipling, author of the Jungle Book. Nowadays, thermal tourism has become more democratic and many walkers like to climb up the old quarter with its picturesque lanes and flowered houses. At the top is the pretty St. Saturnin's church, which stands against the castle reconstructed in the 19th century. A panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, the village and the small Place de la République - the heart of the city, lively on market days -, the thermal baths, its casino (the smallest in France, with only twenty slot machines), and its peaceful little lake in the middle of the park. Vernet-les-Bains is also the starting point for many hikes to the beautiful gorges of Cady or the famous Canigó, accessible in 4 hours of walking from the Mariailles refuge (a track that can be driven from the Col de Jou)
