From Osseja, little D 30 takes us within a few kilometers along the river to the small village of Valcebollère, probably the oldest and most typical of the cerebral villages, in the heart of the Puigmal massif (2,912 meters). Made up of only a few houses, this large hamlet is surrounded by a magnificent mountain circus, where the impression of the world's end is present. The end of the village is a cul de sac, the road stops. This valley sparked by concrete and ski lifts offers you the true nature of the Pyrenees. It was also called the wild border, the border of freedom-collars, because from 1936 many Spanish Republicans crossed it to come to France. Episode less known, it was a great mythical place of men's smugglers during the last World War - English airmen, resilient, Jewish or escaped - who had climbed the passes over Valcebollère to flee the Vichy regime and reach Algiers via Barcelona. Stories of happy or tragic escapes are still being told in the village. Many hiking trails and cross-country ski trails, and some cross-border ones, have been marked to make you discover this historic heritage. Finally, Valcebollère may be a little isolated but surely not asleep, because this village has a mountain museum, a hostel open year round and a tennis court!
