We are in the southernmost part of France, already at the gates of Spain. The village, the most populated of the upper Vallespir with 1,250 inhabitants, is known as the home of weaving, Catalan fabrics and espadrilles, the famous vigatanes (pronounced "bigatanes"). Disused industrial buildings and old bourgeois houses bear witness to Saint-Laurent's prosperity until the 1950s. Before then, 10,000 espadrilles came out of the workshops every day, employing more than a thousand workers! Today, two factories resist the competition by defending the artisanal tradition.
