Louis XIV decided to build a stronghold at the crossroads of the communication routes between Capcir, Cerdagne and Conflent, to mark the border with Spain. He entrusted the construction project to Vauban. In less than 2 years, the city became the highest fortified town in France and was named Mont-Louis, in honor of the Sun King. The city lies at the confluence of three regions: Haut Conflent, Cerdagne and Capcir. It's the starting point for some great hikes to the heights (Cambre d'Aze, Carlit or Puigmal), but also for a little-known part of the department: the Garrotxes. A string of small villages where time seems to stand still.
