It was here that the four Arago brothers were born, the most illustrious being François Arago (1746-1853), physicist, astronomer and politician. Although Estagel is often considered the last town in Catalan country in the Agly valley, its vineyards stretch across the border into the Occitan world. If you'd like to take a mini-hike around the village, climb up to the 12th-century Saint-Vincent chapel. Situated on a hilltop surrounded by pines and garrigue, it offers a magnificent panoramic view of the village, the Corbières massif and the Agly river below.
