Elne is located south-east of Perpignan and only 4 km from the sea. In ancient times, Elne, which was called Illibéris, was one of the only possible land passages between the Iberian world and Mediterranean Gaul. Ecclesiastical capital of Roussillon from 568 to 1801, it conserves from its past power a Romanesque cathedral adjoined by its magnificent marble cloister. Strolling through the narrow streets of the old town, you will be seduced by sections of the old rampart, beautiful residences and the workshops of the craftsmen installed in the upper town. Every summer, Elne comes alive with renowned festivals and exhibitions at the Swiss Maternity Hospital
