Located 40 kilometers south of Bordeaux, Sauternes is famous for its white wine, reputed to be the world's finest sweet wine. The most prestigious of these wines is produced at Château d'Yquem. Unaffordable for the average person, other châteaux offer better value for money. The region is dotted with châteaux and old houses. At the heart of the village is the church, with its pretty Romanesque apse. Its proximity to the Ciron river, a tributary of the Garonne, makes Sauternes an ideal place to relax for nature lovers.
