In the 12th century, an anonymous sculptor with a singular style left unique works in the Pyrenees-Orientales and in the entire Latin arc (from Navarre to Tuscany). He was called the Master of Cabestany after the discovery in 1930 of a Romanesque tympanum during the renovation of the church in Cabestany. Whether he was a lone artist or a sculpture workshop, we will probably never know. Little is known about him except that he distinguished himself by a style of great originality, the works of the time being anonymous. He is characterized by his atypicality and his "modernity"; the size of his hands, the huge exorbitant eyes of his characters as well as the effects of shadow and light and the relief are, among other things, "his touch".
The Romanesque Sculpture Center offers a fascinating journey into the world of this itinerant artist who spread his works on the roads to Compostela and on the road to Rome. From Navarre to Tuscany, we find through sculptures, the traces of his passage. The works presented are casts staged in an ultra-contemporary space thanks to a clever play of light. The visually impaired can "visualize" the sculptures, because here you can touch and caress the works on display. Visually impaired or not, touching the sculptures and following their curves and details with the tips of your fingers or the palm of your hand provides extraordinary sensations... Temporary exhibitions always related to art take place throughout the year on the first floor.
