The roots of the commune's name can be traced back to the Gallo-Romans, who named it Salomacum ("salt market"). The discovery of an Early Iron Age cemetery (600 B.C.) led to the discovery of several cinerary vases, now preserved at the Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux and the Musée de Belin-Beliet. The town is also 87% wooded. Situated on the Eyre (also known as the Leyre) in the Pays de Buch region, the area is part of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park in the Landes forest. Borrow a bike or a canoe to discover this beautiful natural area in the south of Gironde.
