The vast limestone plateau, commonly known as the plain of Monbel, has given rise to various sayings that speak volumes about the harshness of the place: "To cross the plain of Montbel, it is better to wear a cape than a knife". In other words, the climatic rigors on this deserted plateau can be more dangerous than a possible encounter with brigands, who had made this place their hideout in more troubled times. This limestone plateau also presents a geological peculiarity: it is strewn with small depressions in which the rainwater buries itself to re-emerge a few kilometers further south.
