Perched on a rocky outcrop, the ruins of Moissac's fortified castle suggest a sophisticated defense system, made necessary by successive assaults by the Camisards and the King's Dragons. In the 13th century, the hamlet belonged to the House of Anduze, and was rebuilt in the 17th century. Even today, shortly before nightfall, if you're quiet and patient, you may catch a glimpse of beavers near the bridge! Moissac-Vallée-Française, in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, has a population of around 250 and is surrounded by chestnut trees, although pine trees have gained ground over the years.
