Saint Louis' brother Alphonse de Poitiers ordered the construction of the new town in 1255. The streets were laid out in a checkerboard pattern, and a covered market hall was built in Place Centrale. A few decades later, the town was surrounded by walls flanked by towers and five gates. In the Middle Ages, the end of the Hundred Years' War brought prosperity and the construction of fine homes. The town has always occupied a special position between Périgord and Agenais, historically, religiously, geographically and administratively. Paradoxically, the town is also one of the smallest in France.
