The Valdonnez is a small fertile depression between the Causse de Mende and the western flank of the Mont Lozère. The Romans, who knew about colonization, had very early identified the area, rich in agricultural land on the surface, and ore in the subsoil. The ruins of numerous castles (Montalioux, Chapieu...), churches and chapels, such as Saint-Genès above Lanuéjols, the chapel of Saint-Alban on the mound of Balduc show the strategic and spiritual importance of the Valdonnez in the Middle Ages. To the west, behind the Lion of Balsiège, a rock that watches over the descent to Mende, the fortified farm of Choizal is a place worth a visit.
