The Canourgue owes its development to a small river, the Urugne, which runs through the city. Canalised, it fed mills, spinning and weaving mills, tanneries and mega mills which made the reputation and prosperity of the place. Today, all the canals that criss-cross the centre, passing underneath the houses, make up its charm, earning the city the name of Little Lozerian Venice.Seat of a monastery in the 7th century, it was protected by a castle of which the Clock Tower is the only vestige. From its prosperous period, it preserves Renaissance bourgeois houses, with mullioned windows and corbelled. The collegiate church of Saint-Martin, in spite of alterations in the 14th and especially in the 17th century, following the collapse of the bell-tower-porch, has retained its 12th century majesty, its typical layout of large pilgrimage churches. 1 km from La Canourgue, nestling in a green setting, Saint-Frézal is a small Romanesque chapel containing a sarcophagus where the remains of the saint, a pious old man murdered around 820 by his nephew who was influenced by the devil, according to legend! Near the chapel is a spring which is said to never dry up and heal skin diseases. From this starting point, one takes a green path that opens up to beautiful panoramas; the banks of the Urugne river form another walking route, which can lead to the Causse de Sauveterre. From there you can see a natural curiosity, the Malepeyre's hoof: a rock with a characteristic shape, it is said to be the mark of some giant that passed through here.
