On the picturesque banks of the Chapeauroux river, the village of Chastanier grew up around its Romanesque church, built at the end of the 11th century at the highest point on the rock. Dependent on the Benedictine priory of Langogne, it was on the pilgrims' route to Santiago de Compostela, and was named after it. The church endured many vicissitudes, including the Hundred Years' War, conflicts with Protestants and the troubles of the French Revolution, but survived virtually intact until the 19th century, when it was restored to its former glory. The liturgical furnishings have been preserved and are now displayed in a small museum.
