Spread over an area of 5,445 hectares, of which 2,400 ha are in the central zone of the Cévennes National Park, the commune of Altier is composed of 19 hamlets. Its population, 223 inhabitants, triples in season. Its main town, dominated by the Saint-Privat church, is located on the road that now links Villefort to Mende. From the terrace on which the church stands, one can see the imposing ruins of the Altier family's fortified castle, which dates from the 12th century. Below the road, in the direction of Mende, one can see the castle of Champ, still built by the Altier family in the 13th century, which is not open to the public.
