In the north of the department, on the shores of Lake Garabit, the town lived off the water that fed the electrometallurgy factory. It is also proud to have seen the construction of the largest orthopedic shoe in the world by a specialized factory!The hydroelectric plant of Albaret-le-Contal was built between 1916 and 1919 to supply the electrometallurgy plant of Saint-Chély. This enormous site developed the Bès at Vergne, by the construction of a 141 m high dam, all in local stone. It was necessary to build 4.5 km of road to transport the 19-ton rotor from the station to the site. The plant is still in operation today.
