Named "Cessero" at its creation, it is based on impressive basaltic organs, a geological formation caused by the cooling of a lava flow dating back some 650,000 years ago. From its rich past, the Gallo-Roman city has preserved an abbey founded in the 8th century by Attilio, a disciple of Saint Benedict of Aniane. The presence of relics of three Saints within its walls - Tiberius (St. Thibéry), Modest and Florence - encouraged the arrival of pilgrims from all over the world, making it a major place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. It was around this time that the city took the name of Saint-Thibéry, in reference to the abbey and its main relic. This religious history reveals some of its stories within the monument itself so take the time to admire it from all angles. Of course, even if it is the most massive vestige of this period, the village displays many other wonders, partly linked to its location at the crossroads of the first traffic routes (river, Domitian way). Among them: the old mill, the so-called "Roman" bridge, the monastic buildings? In August, you may even have the opportunity to discover them against a background of jazz music...
