The Hôtel Carrion de Nizas in Pézenas is a fine example of a hospice built around 1500
Built around 1500, the name of the master builder of this fine example of a hospice is still unknown. It was named after the Carrion-Nizas family, who owned the property between 1753 and 1795. In the courtyard, the straight staircase retains its original solid banister leading to the first-floor gallery. The spiral tower is supported by a single central column. This last feature, unique to Pézenas, is directly inspired by Lyon architecture of the same period. The faux machicolations underline the noble character of this residence.
