This pretty 10th century town is the economic capital of the Minervois. Olonzac, the heart of the Cathar country, of which Minerve remains the symbol, is a land of contrasts. The Canal du Midi runs through it, and it is home to the garrigue, the rocky terrain and the vines from which the famous Minervois wine is extracted. All around are caves, canyons, plateaus, natural bridges, dolmens and Romanesque churches. It is the proximity of the Canal du Midi which offers the most interest, in particular the presence of the lock and the bridge-canal of the Ognon. One comes from afar to enjoy the lake of Jouarres, which is the only body of water in the area for swimming and water sports.
