Former summer residence of the Bishops of Agde, Nézignan was built on an ancient Roman villa, then organized in the form of a circulade around the mound of the ancient castle (destroyed in 1759). Its alleys are centuries old and pretty vegetable gardens surround the 12th century church of Sainte Marie-Madeleine and its museum of sacred art and history, a 17th century fountain and Renaissance style mansions. The village has built its reputation around the cultivation of figs since the reign of François I. It is valued by the Confrérie des Bécos Figos (fig eaters), an arboretum and by some festivities.
