Montpellier, capital of the former Languedoc-Roussillon region, is a thriving city. In fact, it is France's fastest-growing city! Student and festive, modern and historic, it offers a beautiful living environment. In just three decades, it has gone from being a sleepy belle to a city of technology and culture, with museums, art galleries, concert halls and festivals such as the Comédie du Livre, the Festival des Fanfares, the International Guitar Festival, the Adventure and Travel Film Festival, Arabesques... The city also offers a fine blend of ancient architecture (town houses, cathedrals, the oldest medical school) and contemporary architecture (Port Marianne, Antigone, Halles du Lez, Pierresvives, l'Arbre Blanc), all within easy reach of the coast by streetcar or bike. Despite its dense population, Montpellier is an intimate city on a human scale, where every sector enjoys a pleasant neighborhood life. You can visit the entire city center on foot, enjoying the pleasure of getting lost in the labyrinthine old cobbled streets that all lead to absolutely sublime squares (Place de la Canourgue, chic and upmarket, Place Jean Jaurès, student and noisy, Saint-Anne, beautiful and solemn and finally, our favorite, Saint-Roch, surrounded by bistros and century-old olive trees). The shopkeepers are jovial and welcoming, but be careful not to rush them. Here, there's no need to rush; take your time, chat with the regulars and enjoy the gentle Southern way of life! In Montpellier, there's no room for boredom. Make a date at the Comédie or the préfecture, go shopping on rue de l'Aiguillerie, eat in the sun on the Esplanade, stroll along the quays at Rives du Lez, stroll through Peyrou or the Jardin des Plantes, and the evening often continues in the lively streets according to your gastronomic desires and budget, because there's something for everyone! Two new halles have recently opened: Halles du Lez (Port-Marianne) and Halles Laissac (station area), which bring together a number of food stalls, allowing you to either shop or dine in a convivial setting on large central tables, for a moment of relaxation or just to enjoy a coffee or aperitif.
