Jean Ranc is a painter born in Montpellier in 1674. Better known in Spain, his hometown wished to pay tribute to him on the occasion of an exhibition called Jean Ranc - Un montpelliérain à la cour des rois. He painted many kings and queens in the course of his career, but he nevertheless started working in France, where the bourgeoisie of Montpellier recognised his talent and did not hesitate to commission him to paint. In 1722, Philip V, King of Spain, needed a portraitist, and it was then that the painter moved to Madrid. The Fabre Museum now exhibits several of his works, including the mythical and surprising "Vertumne et Pomone", a painting depicting a man dressed as an old woman.
