Things to see and do Marseillan

Built at the beginning of the 15th century, the first town hall was called the "Maison Commune". Remains its black basaltic stone crest of Agde, surrounded by a carved heart where the letters "C.C" are engraved (Corps Consulaire) and above, the date: 1587.

The Hotel de Ville is a spacific former house. The Municipality settled there in 1919. It is in 1980 that it takes its current aspect with the complete renovation of the entrance hall, transformed into a reception and exhibition room which now houses a collection of ancient remains, treasures collected in the Etang de Thau.

The Tourist Office of Marseillan-Plage is available throughout the year for requests for useful information, questions about accommodation or food, about the city's cultural and sports agenda, activities to do in the region, etc.

Built in the th century in the volcanic stone of Agde with a structure bordered in Venetian Venetian style, the covered square of Marseillan was renovated several times during the th century. This building has long been the main gathering place for the Marseillanais in markets and festivals.

It was in December 1816 that the third town hall settled at that location, at the time it housed the responsible of the commune but also the prison. During the next century, the building will decay and become unhealthy. At the end of 1919, the town hall moved and took its quarters of General-de-Gaulle, leaving for the building only its door.

In the past, this great iron Christ was installed on the Place de la République, instead of the former place of the Croix de la Mission. In revolutionary events, the work was transported at the Cimetière-Vieux before being definitively installed on the Place Général-Guillaut on June 26, 1994.

Remains of the Chapelle des Pénitents Bleus in Marseillan in 1596, which the brotherhood was dissolved around 1720.

Also marketplace, the Place Carnot is the gathering place of the Marseillanais. A beating heart of the village, it was covered in 1310 by a wooden building and replaced in 1808 by a frame bordered in Venetian with arches built in black basaltic stones of Agde.

The monument as we know was completed in 1984.

The history of Marseillan is rich, this vestige of the city is a further proof. This porcheron appeared in 1355 in anticipation of the Black Prince's attack, son of the King of England. It came out of the will of the Bishop of Agde to strengthen the door of Agde. Today the monument retains its shape and part of its original stones.

It is the native home of Achille Maffre de Baugé (1855-1928). A friend of Frédéric Mistral, his life was tumultuous and adventurous.

To facilitate the life of tourists, the commune opens in summer a Tourist Information Centre in Marseillan-Ville. An excellent initiative for all those who cannot go to the tourist office of Marseillan-Plage.
