Halfway between Montpellier and Palavas-les-Flots, on the edge of the ponds, Lattes gradually reveals the riches of its past. Frequented by Etruscans from the seventh century BC, Lattara was probably the first port in Western Europe. In the Middle Ages, Lattes was the port of Montpellier where important markets were dealt with the rising Mediterranean countries. The city has revived this port tradition by building around the Basin of the Lez a new neighborhood, Port Ariane, whose architecture has the appearance of Italy.
