Hidden among the red soil of the Ruffe, sheltered by the white dolomitic cliffs, are the three small hamlets (Dio, Valquières and Vernazoubres) that make up the commune. From this unreal chromatic universe evoking another planet, it is astonishing to see the medieval castle of Dio rising to the top of an eminence dominating the village. The 13th century fortress is emblematic of the architecture of the feudal world. The building was renovated in the seventeenth century and was given bays giving it more light. Classified by the Historical Monuments, only a few remains bear witness to its greatness. Nestled at the foot of its church covered with lauze, Valquières retains all its charm of yesteryear. On the road to Santiago de Compostela, the village has preserved its beautiful medieval houses huddled around its 12th century church.
