Once a town of tanners and clothmakers, it was to enable craftsmen to develop their skills that the town expanded beyond its ramparts in the 14th century, along the banks of the Rhonel River. It was at this time that the town's most emblematic buildings were constructed: the hospital, the Dominican monastery and the Benedictine monks' abbey. The Wars of Religion and the plague epidemic severely affected the town, which fell asleep for several centuries. It wasn't until the 18th century that Clermont enjoyed another period of great prosperity, this time in the industrial manufacture of cloth.
