If its name comes from castrum, a strong place that served as a relay on the domitienne track, the Roman period left little trace. It is rather the th century that the city draws all its glory, linked to the grandeur of the family of Castries (that, by a strange, it is pronounced «Castrates» in this case). The imposing aqueduct was built by Pierre-Paul Riquet at the request of the Marquis René de Castries between 1670 and 1676 to feed the garden garden designed by Le Nôtre. You can follow the arches of this book in the garrigue to the ruins of the th century Romanesque church Saint-Etienne. At the outskirts of the village are the quarries from which the famous stones of Castries have been taken from the construction of many monuments in the region.
