Built on a site populated since the Copper Age, Castelnau-le-Lez is an ancient city created more than 2000 years ago. In ancient times, it was a fortress overlooking the Lez River known as Sextantion or Suxtantione, the sixth station on the great Domitian road. In the Middle Ages, the inhabitants gathered at the foot of a castle: Castellum Novum, to protect themselves from barbarian invasions. Then, the village gathered around its 12th century church. The visitor will be able to lose himself in the cobbled streets and to discover at the bend of a street the church Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the ice-house of the XVIIIth century, the house of Arts, the water tower.
