Located south of Saint-Martin-de-Londres and close to Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, this village combines the authenticity of its steep streets and stone houses with the modernity of more recent dwellings. Its name seems to be inspired by the Occitan word "argiala", meaning clay, whose use in pottery was particularly important in the neighbouring commune of Saint-Jean-de-Fos. However, no pottery activity has been proven on the territory. Another explanation then appears more likely: the name would be derived from the Latin ager ilicum, meaning the field with oaks.
