Agde faces both the sea and the wine-growing plains. Founded in the 7th century B.C. by the Phocaeans, Agathé, or Agde la bienheureuse by its Greek name, was the second Roman colony after Marseille. Built on a volcanic site, Agde is steeped in maritime tradition. Discover the town's history through a rich heritage that takes you from Greek Antiquity to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.Today, the town and the agglomeration are developing an ambitious project to make Agde an essential stopover for river tourism. The aim is to develop the existing river port opposite the Hôtel Riquet, taking advantage of the rich environment created by the Canalet, Belle Isle park, Château Laurens, Hôtel Riquet and the round lock. The project calls for the extension of the dock from 6,000 to 18,000m2 to accommodate 156 boats, the creation of a landscaped park, the redevelopment of the riverbanks, the construction of a harbor master's office and a technical area, as well as a grey water pumping station and the creation of a riverside cycle path. The Hôtel Riquet, owned by Voies navigables de France, is to be converted into a floating hotel. Another spearhead of the project is the creation of a stretch of water capable of accommodating some sixty floating tourist accommodations, offering a very high quality of service, and capable of adapting to rising water levels. A suspended city is taking shape, with all new constructions planned to be built on stilts. With a landscaped area at the heart of the block.
