This commune is located on a territory recognized as a biosphere reserve by Unesco, it also has two Natura 2000 sites: the Gardon de Mialet valley and the Galeizon valley. Inhabited since Neolithic times, dolmens, burials and numerous engravings testify to this occupation. It has also seen confrontation between Catholics and Protestants in the 18th century, it is the birthplace of a famous Camisard leader, Gédéon Laporte, who took part in the assassination of the Abbot of Chayla. Its coat of arms sums up its situation well: three mountains surmounted by a chestnut leaf, a sword and a mulberry leaf.
