FRENCH CENTRE MAURIAC
Cultural center with website in Saint-Maixant, organizing free events that must be booked in advance
Open to the public since 1997, the Malagar estate was owned by the family of the Gironde writer François Mauriac from 1843 to 1985, when his descendants donated it to the Regional Council of Aquitaine. The estate has remained as François Mauriac, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, left it in 1968. Born in Bordeaux in 1885, François Mauriac stayed as a child in Saint-Symphorien, where he decided to become a writer. Although he had origins in Languedoc, it was at the age of 17 that he discovered Malagar, which he inherited in 1927. This wine property - Premières-Côtes-de-Bordeaux - which he nicknamed his querencia (the bull's place of refuge in the arena), welcomed him at Easter and for the harvest. François Mauriac wrote his Blocs-notes and Nœud de vipères here. This novel as well as Flesh and Blood and Destinies are set in the property. After 2 years of work, Malagar reopened its doors in February 2022. The Domaine reveals itself to the public during a very enriching visit. But more than a writer's house, Malagar as a cultural center is also a real showcase of the New Aquitaine region, through a season rich in events whose agenda can be discovered on the website. Every year, the François Mauriac Center of Malagar organizes the literary competition Prix François Mauriac. All the events proposed by the Centre François Mauriac de Malagar within the framework of the cultural season are free of charge (reservation required, think about it).
