Saint-Macaire is a splendid medieval site surrounded by ramparts. Called Ligena in ancient times, the town took the name of the saint who came to evangelize it, and grew up around its abbey. Start at the 14th-century Porte de Benauge, a wonderful example of the village's fortified entrance, then in the center, the Place du Mercadiou, considered the most beautiful in the département, with its blonde stone arcades, 14th- to 16th-century facades and Renaissance-style coaching inn. The village is home to many old houses, the finest of which are those of Tardes, La Roque, Eyquem or Baritault and Flous.
