Founded at the end of the 19th century, when coal was the main employer in the commune, Les Mages did not experience a demographic decline like some of its neighbours when the mines closed. Better still, the commune attracted artists: Georges Beaucquier, painter and initiator in Biot of the museum dedicated to Fernand Leger, of whom he was a collaborator (the village houses a fresco of this painter), but also the Schoenenberger family who also created a museum and a beautiful hotel eponymous. It is home to the remains of its industrial past: spinning mills (there were not far from a dozen!), mills, glassworks and a small heritage of dry stone.
