The vestiges still present bear witness to Saint-Laurent-du-Médoc's strategic place in French history. The commune was built on the edge of a Roman road built under Caesar (56 BC) to link Castelnau to Lesparre, and was named after the Christian martyr Laurentius. Then it was the turn of the Order of St. John, famous for its participation in the Crusades, to settle here. The English then took over for almost 300 years: the stonework of religious buildings bears witness to this occupation. Another of the region's assets: the Haut-Médoc appellation boasts 500 ha of cultivated land.
