Cathedral Saint-Jean-Baptiste of Alès, classified as a historical monument, offering a stylistic panel of architectural languages
Built in the 12th century, then destroyed in the Middle Ages, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste cathedral is a Romanesque edifice rebuilt in the 17th century to combat the Protestants, during the confrontations between the royal power of Louis XIV and the Huguenots. Listed as a historic monument since 1914, and recently renovated, it offers a stylistic mix of Romanesque, Gothic and neoclassical architectural styles, adorned by works by Joseph Marinelli and Antoine Sublet.
