Saint-Germain-d'Esteuil is one of the oldest communes in the Médoc, as evidenced by a number of Gallo-Roman remains, including those of the Gallo-Roman theater at Brion (listed as a historical monument in 1984). It is the only known Gallo-Roman theater in the Aquitaine basin south of the Garonne, according to the current state of archaeological discoveries and excavations. The Barbehère covered alley refers to a dolmen built in the commune during the Middle Neolithic period. In the 18th century, the Order of Malta had a hospital in the commune. There are currently around 1,245 inhabitants of Saint-Germin.
