Bordered by the Canal du Midi and the river Aude, this fertile commune lies about fifteen kilometres from Narbonne. Built in the 9th century, it is now surrounded by 900 hectares of vineyards and market gardening. Some works of art and historical monuments are to be discovered in the village: a sarcophagus from the High Middle Ages, the old ceiling of the town hall (16th century), the fireplace of the Abbots of Fonfroide's dwelling (16th century), the castle of the Count of Artois, a former hunting lodge from the 18th century... Saint-Nazaire d'Aude is one of the three communes on which the picturesque hamlet of Le Somail depends, with Ginestas and Sallèles-d'Aude.
