Geographical crossroads and tourist capital of the upper Aude valley, Quillan has known several industrial and commercial lives: in the 12th century, the megisseries which processed the skins of isards and goats settled on the banks of the Aude. Oil, wine and wood were also sources of wealth. In the 17th century, metalwork, cloth and nail making were added. In the 19th century, the hat industry gave it a worldwide reputation, which was gradually replaced by the shoe industry. Today, it is tourism that carries the city and its surroundings. It enjoys a wonderful natural environment and a rich heritage.
