The basilica's Romanesque vault contrasts with the Gothic chevet and transept, illuminated by stained glass windows.
Construction of the basilica, a true Romanesque-Gothic masterpiece, began at the end of the 11thcentury . Pope Urban II passed through Carcassonne, and blessed the first stone of the edifice in June 1096. Construction was not completed until the mid-14thcentury , after the Romanesque choir had been rebuilt in Gothic style. Today, the nave is the oldest part of the church. Its Romanesque semi-circular vault contrasts with the Gothic chevet and transept, illuminated by 13th-century stained-glass windows.
