Located to the west of Versailles, Thoiry etymologically takes its name from the Latin Torus, meaning "bulge of land". The village, which has retained its rural character, owes its international renown to its 16th-century Renaissance château, and above all to its outstanding zoo. Created in 1968 by Count Antoine de La Panouse, it houses a magnificent African reserve and safari park. For many, the town's name has become synonymous with the animal park. With a population of around 1,400, the town lives to the rhythm of the tourist seasons, which bring an influx of over 400,000 visitors every year.
